FIFA announces record-breaking prize money for club world cup winners

Written by on March 28, 2025

Football history is about to be made! FIFA has unveiled a record-breaking prize fund for the upcoming 32-team Club World Cup in the United States, with the winners set to earn an unprecedented Ksh 16.5 billion ($125 million). This is the largest amount ever awarded in a FIFA competition, highlighting the growing importance of club football on the global stage. The total prize pool for the tournament, scheduled from June 14 to July 13, is Ksh 132 billion ($1 billion). This includes Ksh 69.2 billion ($525 million) in guaranteed fees for participating teams and another Ksh 62.7 billion ($475 million) in performance-based earnings.

Unmatched prize structure

The tournament’s prize distribution ensures that every team walks away with a significant amount. The top European club—expected to be Real Madrid—will earn Ksh 5 billion ($38.19 million), while Auckland City, representing Oceania, will receive Ksh 476 million ($3.58 million). FIFA has also set performance bonuses throughout the competition:
  • Ksh 260 million ($2 million) for each group stage victory
  • Ksh 975 million ($7.5 million) for reaching the round of 16
  • Ksh 5.28 billion ($40 million) for the team that lifts the trophy at MetLife Stadium in New York
Each of the 12 European teams will receive a minimum participation fee of Ksh 1.7 billion ($12.81 million), while teams from Africa, Asia, and North America—including Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami—will each get Ksh 1.26 billion ($9.55 million). FIFA has also pledged to distribute Ksh 33 billion ($250 million) to clubs worldwide that did not qualify for the competition, though details on how many clubs will benefit remain unclear.

A tournament like no other

The new Club World Cup format expands the competition to 32 teams, making it the biggest edition yet. This move is aimed at increasing global club competition and providing a grander stage for teams from all continents. Unlike the previous format, where only a few teams participated, this edition will feature a World Cup-style group stage followed by knockout rounds. The tournament promises high-stakes football, with clubs battling not only for the title but also for massive financial rewards.

Saudi Arabia’s growing influence in football

The delayed announcement of the prize fund was due to finalizing a global broadcast deal with DAZN, which later received a major investment from Saudi Arabia’s state-backed sports agency. This follows FIFA’s decision to award the hosting rights for the 2034 Men’s World Cup to Saudi Arabia, underlining the country’s increasing involvement in global football.

What this means for clubs worldwide

The record-breaking prize pool signals a new era in club football, where financial rewards are bigger than ever. Clubs will not only gain international exposure but also earn sums that could significantly impact their future. For teams outside Europe, the tournament provides a rare chance to compete against elite clubs on a global stage and potentially claim a share of the massive prize money. As football fans eagerly await the tournament, one thing is certain: the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will be the richest and most competitive club competition in history.
